Custom software is worth building when your process is genuinely a competitive advantage — and a waste when it is not. We start by working out which one you have.
The strongest case for custom software is a process that is unusual and valuable, where forcing it into a generic product would destroy the thing that makes you money. The weakest case is wanting a familiar tool with slightly different labels.
Both requests arrive worded identically. Telling them apart before the budget is committed is the most valuable hour in the engagement.
What we build
Replacing spreadsheet sprawl
The workbook with twelve tabs that three people maintain and everyone fears. Usually the fastest, clearest return in custom software.
Process-specific systems
Workflows no packaged product models correctly — multi-party approvals, unusual pricing rules, industry-specific compliance steps.
Consolidating tool sprawl
Replacing six disconnected subscriptions and the manual re-typing between them with one system that holds the whole flow.
Extending what you own
Often the correct answer: keep the product you have bought and build only the missing piece around it.
How we work
- 1
Buy-versus-build, honestly
We look for an existing product that fits first. Recommending one costs us the project and saves you most of the budget, and we still do it.
- 2
Map the real process
Including the undocumented exceptions people handle by memory. Those exceptions are where custom builds overrun, because nobody mentions them until testing.
- 3
Build the painful part first
Not the easy screens. Delivering the hardest piece early is what makes an estimate trustworthy.
- 4
Train and hand over
Custom software fails at adoption more often than at delivery. Training and a real handover are part of the project, not an afterthought.
How we price it
Discovery is a small paid engagement with its own deliverable — a scope document and an estimate you can take to another vendor if you want. That is deliberate.
Software of ours you can open right now

Questions we get asked
Is custom software more expensive than a subscription product?
Upfront, almost always. Over five years, frequently not — particularly once per-seat pricing grows with your headcount. We will model both against your actual numbers rather than assert either.
What if an off-the-shelf product would work?
We will tell you, and name it. We would rather lose the project than build something you will resent paying for.
How do you keep a custom build from overrunning?
A written scope with explicit exclusions, the hardest component built first, and a change process where scope additions are priced when requested rather than absorbed silently and surfaced at the end.
Can you take over software another vendor built?
Yes, after a paid audit. Sometimes the audit concludes that a rewrite is cheaper than the rescue, and we will show you the reasoning rather than just asserting it.

Tell us what you are trying to build. The first call is a scoping conversation, not a pitch — and if you do not need us, we will say so.
